Essential Functions and Objectives:

Reporting to the Director of the Department of Extended Learning and Community Schools ("DELCS"), the Associate Director is responsible for providing department leadership related to continuous improvement of high quality out-of-school time programming.

The Associate Director will provide coaching and training to programming Supervisors who oversee Neighborhood Centers, Discovery Link and Middle School programming sites.  The Associate Director will work with Supervisors to support programming development focused on student safety, DPS Whole Child initiatives, School Improvement Priorities and organizational alignment to Denver After School Alliance Quality Improvement Standards, with an emphasis on Social, Emotional and Academic Learning (SEAL) priorities.

Additional responsibilities of the Associate Director will include, coordination of professional development for all programming staff including focus on culturally relevant practices; Completing state and federal grant applications to secure additional revenue sources; Implementation of sustainable financial models aligned to the department’s long range strategic plan.  The Associate Director will also work with DELCS HR team on retention and recruiting efforts for out-of-school time programming staff (350-400 employees), including the development of a pipeline for department leadership

The ultimate objective of the role is to develop and oversee the strategic planning and execution of data-driven decision making in the out-of-school time realm that impacts more than 4000 students (observation, feedback, coaching, and collaboration).  This strategic approach will include community partners and nationally based initiatives and continuous program evaluation to assess the impact on student academic and social emotional outcomes.


-        Work with Leadership Team to embed the DELCS vision into strategic program design and manage team members to effectively execute delivery of this vision

-        Work with team members to develop and refine resources for the field around effective quality out of school time program initiatives


-        Provide coaching to build capacity of program Supervisors.

-        Continue and expand culture and equity growth through strategic initiatives for DELCS incredibly diverse team of educators through targeted and specific professional development

-        Support work within the department to address critical areas in need of improvement to better serve our students and school communities.

-        Engage all team staff in creating relevant goals and identifying themselves as members of the broader Access, Competency, & Engagement team and developing cross-functional team collaborations

-        Evaluate the work of team staff; determine accountable goal tracking, CollaboRATE action and impact on students we serve

-        Create strategic plan to support on-going sustainability and growth of services

Systems and Structures

-        Support programming strategic design aligned to department mission and vision.

-        Support programming quality review and data-driven decision making.

-        Support department in HR processes (onboarding, interview protocols, recruiting, and retention) for out-of-school time staff.

-        Support department in development of an internal leadership pipeline.

-        Support department and district initiatives related to new summer programming.


-        Work collaboratively with DELCS stakeholders to develop efficiencies in processes and improvements in programs that ultimately put Students First

-        Create, curate, and share resources (tools, online resources, trainings, etc.) around the impact and abilities of out of school time to contribute to day school learning and Whole Child goals

-        Cultivate essential working relationships with other managers internal and external to DELCS to ensure that district goals are met

-        Support the strategic planning process for the district and schools through the implementation of data-driven decision making for our most critical improvements and successes


-        Performs other duties as assigned



Knowledge, Experience & Other Qualifications:

-        Five (5) or more years of related experience in the field of education, youth development, or a closely related field with a minimum of two (2) years of administrative experience

Proven ability to effectively:

-        Demonstrated ability to lead a team and to lead across departments

-        Motivate oneself and others toward high levels of achievement

-        Fundamental understanding of out-of-school time programs

-        Knowledge of effective professional learning programs and methodologies and experience in providing such professional learning to meet the needs of adult learners

-        Strong desire and willingness to support student achievement in all school communities

-        Capable of thriving in circumstances involving ambiguity and nuance

-        Plan, manage, and document projects

-        Perform project needs analysis, task analysis, and gap analysis

-        Establish and maintain project scope and goals; prepare project management documentation

-        Prioritize and schedule responsibilities for oneself and others

-        Manage conflict and respond creatively to challenges

-        Facilitate user groups, focus groups, meetings, and project teams

-        Work with varying levels of management in a proactive and forward thinking manner

-        Communicate with diverse groups, including marketing presentations to various constituencies

-        Prepare reports, professional correspondences, and procedural guides and manuals

-        Solid technical skills and experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat and Google Drive apps

-        Write and prepare grant and fundraising proposals


Extensive knowledge of:

-        Culturally responsive strategies for ensuring educational success

-        Best practices for the design and delivery of high quality afterschool programming and youth development

-        Assessment and evaluation tools and techniques for quality afterschool programming and student engagement

-        District strategies and priorities, including the Denver Plan 2020

-        Project management fundamentals

-        Budget and financial preparation and management; legal compliance; HR management

-        Understanding of Whole Child and Personalized Learning practices 

Education Requirements:  

-        Bachelor’s degree required in education, non-profit management, or related field; advanced degree preferred
