Position summary


To provide leadership in the daily operations of the Hospital.   Provide business development of Longmont United Hospital (LUH), acting as the representative in all operational related initiatives and strategies, in collaboration with the CEO.  This position will have input and drive entity specific strategic and operational initiatives which also includes the identification of programs and services to meet the changing market demands. 

The CNO / COO acts as the lead executive in the absence of the President / CEO.

The COO / CNO has responsibility and accountability for leading hospital clinical operations by working through directors and other health care team members in providing patient care 24 hours/day and 7 days/week.  The COO / CNO exercises accountability for nursing care wherever it is provided in the Hospital.  The  COO / CNO assumes active leadership role with Community Board, Senior Leadership, Medical Staff, and with hospital leaders in the Hospital and Centura Health.

education requirements

  • Masters Degree in Nursing (Masters in other discipline acceptable if holds BSN in nursing)
  • Nurse Executive Certification or Eligibility

work experience requirements

  • 5 years experience in nursing or hospital management and hospital operational role
  • 10 years progressive nursing experience



  • Current CO RN License
  • Eligible for certification in nursing administration

Position duties (essential functions, INCLUDE % OF TIME)

Knowledge of the Healthcare Environment -20 %

Maintains knowledge of current nursing practice and the roles and functions of patient care team members. Articulate patient care standards as published by JCAHO, CMS, and professional nursing organizations.  Ensure compliance with the Colorado Nurse Practice Act and regulations.  Directs delivery of patient care.

  • Ensures clinical policies and procedures are current in accordance with evidence-based practice and professional standards.
  • Maintains current knowledge of patient care delivery systems with associated staffing plans and integration of technology.
  • Interprets the impact of state and federal legislation on nursing and healthcare organizations.  Participate in policy development as necessary.
  • Represents nursing and patient care issues at the Community Board.
  • Understands clinical and financial outcomes that are sensitive to the structural and process of nursing practice.  Integrate the reporting of these outcomes and required process improvement into decision making at the executive level.




Business Acumen – 20 %

The CNO / COO must maintain and/or improve operations and financial performance at LUH while improving quality of care.   The CNO / COO must be adept in both Studer and Lean/Six Sigma principles and must focus on breaking down existing silos to create and/ or maintain a service oriented culture at LUH.


Articulates the business model for Hospital, understands how it relates to the industry and marketplace, demonstrates the ability to assess situations, diagnose problems, and determine appropriate course of action to enhance the effectiveness of the organization in alignment with the mission and values.

  • Understands healthcare financing and educates others on business metrics and how patient care decisions impact the success of the hospital
  • Understands the market and industry to anticipate changes and respond with programs and/or revenue enhancing opportunities
  • Participates in formulation of a strategic or business plan that reflects the mission and vision of Centura Health and individual entity and integrates the role of nursing in the plan. Executes strategic plan for nursing.
  • Participates in workforce planning and employment decisions including diversity analysis, workplace health and satisfaction, and management of human resources
  • Advocates for personal point of view by sharing research and information and listening to the perspective of others to balance the financial perspective with quality, safety, and people


Leadership - 20  %

Overall Leadership for hospital activities in collaboration with CEO; expansion and growth of services and service lines, physician relations, clinical operational oversight, support and ancillary services


Promotes transformational nursing leadership as a science and an art in building loyalty and commitment throughout the organization.

  • Serves as a change agent, assisting others in understanding the importance, necessity, impact and process of change through active involvement in decision making and coaching of leaders
  • Provides information and methods to every level of nursing to enable process improvement
  • Maintains an environment where Just Culture practices are used and it is safe to learn and grow as a professional
  • Demonstrates the ability and willingness to continually enhance and improve service to patients and physicians and the efficiency of operational processes and systems through teamwork across disciplines
  • Serves as a professional role model and mentor to future nursing leaders
  • Participates in Centura Nursing Council and provides leadership in execution of strategic plan.


Provide senior leadership in the creation and deployment of operating goals and objectives;   the establishment and achievement of core metrics for clinical quality, operating and financial performance; and achieving high levels of satisfaction for all constituencies (i.e. staff, patients, physicians, etc.) for LUH.



Communication and Relationship Building - 20 %

Builds trusting, collaborative relationships.  Acts with integrity.  Cares about people as individuals demonstrating empathy and concern while ensuring that organizational goals and objectives are met.  Creates and maintains a safe, transparent environment through honesty and trust.

  • Communicates with clinical nurses, leaders, medical staff, and Board about nursing, healthcare, and organizational issues
  • Supports an environment of shared decision-making
  • Represents Porter to other healthcare and non-healthcare constituents within the community
  • Collaborates with academic partners in evaluating the quality of graduating clinicians and developing mechanisms to enhance this quality through resources, research, and/or personal involvement
  • Builds credibility and trust with physicians as a champion for patient care, quality, and nursing professionalism


Develop a strong rapport and working relationship with the CEO:   Become a loyal and valued advisor to the CEO who must feel confident in this person’s abilities as a leader and as a strong operations executive who can effectively manage the hospital and projects.    The CNO / COO must know when and how to keep the CEO informed and develop effective methods of communication.


Actively pursues positive, visible associate relations.  Coaches, develops and mentors entity leadership.  Collaborates effectively to promote communication, cooperation and teamwork in support of entity, group, and system initiatives.


The CNO / COO will work to develop positive collaborative relationships with the medical staff, communicate openly with them, address concerns and validate their contributions to the organization.   The CNO / COO will find ways to engage and align physicians with LUH in a positive, long-term fashion.   Ensure that the medical staff development plan is a living document that informs and guides operations, plans, budgets and initiatives.

Models courage, authenticity, service, and truth in demonstrating personal and professional accountability to achieve the goals of Hospital and Centura Nursing Council.  Models the perspective that patient care is the core of the organization’s work.  Possesses an energy and passion for excellence and confidence to make sound decisions despite uncertainty or other pressures.
