Lead Organizer

The Wisconsin Healthcare Organizing Project is hiring a lead organizer for the Milwaukee area.

Healthcare services are under attack like never before by profit driven hospital systems and predatory insurance and pharmaceutical companies. The voices of nurses and healthcare workers are being silenced. The Wisconsin Healthcare Organizing Project is seeking a full-time Lead organizer willing to join the fight to strengthen the voice of healthcare workers by building a work site representative member driven structure to advocate for its members, patients and the community

The lead organizer will report directly to the National Representative and work together on building out a campaign plan. Lead will be responsible for all aspects of a campaign including one-on-one visits, building relationships with workers, developing issues-based organizing plans, and for recruiting and sustaining motivation of organizing committee members and activists. The lead organizer will also mentor staff in performing the above tasks and offer high level strategic input. This project is a joint venture between the American Federation of Teachers and the Wisconsin Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Qualifications and Expectations:

  • A minimum of two years as a union organizer and significant knowledge of union organizing is required.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and achieve goals.

  • Ability to take direction and work well on a team.

  • Must be an effective communicator with excellent interpersonal and writing skills.

  • Experience and record of organizing others, building unity among diverse groups, and mobilizing others to take action.

  • Proficiency in exercising leadership and independent judgment within the context of an overall plan and structure to ensure goals and objectives are being met.

  • Experience creating plans and setting goals, with a track record of reaching them.

  • Aptitude to provide a high level of strategic input into the direction/calendar of the campaign.

  • Ability to make effective recommendations as to development of campaign calendar.

  • Submit regular work plans and campaign reports.

  • Capacity to work on multiple campaigns simultaneously.

  • Mentor staff and member leaders in all aspects of organizing.

  • Motivate and guide organizing staff and member leaders.

  • Oversee the day-to-day operation of the campaign.

  • Ability to write and conduct trainings for member leaders and organizing staff.

  • Must be competent in computer/web functions, including email, Microsoft Office Suite, databases, google documents, and Excel.

  • Must be willing to work long and variable hours, including evenings and weekends.

  • Proof of a valid driver’s license and insured vehicle required.
