Job Description

Position Goal

The Food Service Supervisor is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the District Child Nutrition Program and ensuring that students have nutritional meals that meet the USDA guidelines, directing staff, maintaining all District kitchens and taking appropriate action by performing the following duties.


Qualifications:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Associate’s Degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two-year accredited college, university or technical school; three to five years of institutional food service training or experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Must possess or be able to obtain CPR and First Aid certification.

  • Must possess or be able to obtain Child Nutrition Programs Certification, Food Manager’s Certificate and Arizona Food Handler’s Card.

  • ServSafe Food Protection (or similar) Manager Certification to train District Kitchen Managers preferred.

  • Knowledge of institutional kitchen equipment including operation and preventive maintenance procedures.

  • Must be able to lift required amounts.

  • Knowledge of OSHA requirements, HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points) and other District, Federal and State workplace safety requirements and ability to adhere to the guidelines and procedures.

  • Must be able to develop and motivate a productive Food Service team and to act as an effective team leader.

  • Must have an understanding of food service program finances and the ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume.

  • Must be able to use District computer software to maintain accurate records, write routine reports, correspondence and procedure manuals.

  • Must be able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, spreadsheets, operating and maintenance instructions and policy manuals.

  • Ability to assess concerns and complaints of students, staff and parents and proceed appropriately.

  • Must possess excellent communication skills and must be able to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of supervisors, subordinates, other employees, parents and the general public.

  • Must be able to travel to and from all District schools and departments.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Follows Federal and State guidelines to plan menus for multi-site food service program including adaptations for children with special needs. Verifies and monitors HACCP procedures, including temperature logs.

  2. Verifies that each student-reimbursable meal meets federal guidelines.

  3. Inspects food and preparation to maintain quality standards and sanitation regulations. Ensures food service area meets all health requirements. Enforces fire, safety and sanitation codes in kitchen and serving areas.

  4. Prepares food items: plans, estimates quantities and prepares breakfast and lunch.

  5. Estimates food and beverage costs; orders all supplies and food products. Conducts food cost control measures.

  6. Confers with food preparation staff, student clubs and other personnel to plan menus and related activities such as dining room, food cart, barbecue, fine dining and banquet operations. Coordinates set up of special functions on site.

  7. Builds sales by promoting customer satisfaction.

  8. Maintains inventory records, takes inventory and values according to established district procedures.

  9. Verifies cash collected to cash register tape and plate count, and reconciles discrepancies. Prepares and makes daily deposits of revenue.

  10. Analyzes financial statements, ensures invoices are paid. Reviews financial transactions and monitors budget to ensure efficient operation, and to ensure expenditures stay within budget limitations.

  11. Maintains student accounts, collects money and makes summary reports as needed.

  12. Responsible for all production records associated with the meal program. Utilize computer software programs to ensure efficient and accurate recordkeeping.

  13. Checks and signs time cards.

  14. Oversees administration of free and reduced meal program according to federal regulations. Reviews and processes free and reduced lunch applications.

  15. Maintains records and prepares reports, including daily cash report, menu productions sheets, employee schedules, free/reduced lunch roster, etc.  

  16. Addresses complaints and resolves problems. Investigates and resolves food quality and service complaints.

  17. Supervises food service staff and production. Trains employees in all areas of Food Service.

  18. Assigns work schedules and duties for Food Service employees. Maintains hours within budget guidelines.

  19. Develops a plan for providing services in response to disaster or emergency situations.

  20. Fills in for employees in department when necessary.

  21. Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervises employees in the Food Service Department including subordinate supervisors and their staffs. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with District policy and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; daily communication with Kitchen Managers; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, talk or hear, and taste or smell. The employee frequently is required to walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and bend, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and move up to 30 pounds and occasionally team lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and extreme heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, outside weather conditions and extreme cold; toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock and vibration.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
