Director Risk Management

Provides leadership, direction and oversight to the TMC Healthcare Risk Management Program and its affiliate TMCOne. Monitors and reports results of risk reduction efforts to the Chief Medical Officer (CMO). Implements all necessary actions to ensure achievement of the objectives of the Risk Management Program. Participates in quality, performance improvement and patient safety activities. Works collaboratively with senior leadership, clinical leaders and frontline staff to identify and reduce risk organization wide.
Facilitates risk control activities (e.g. Root Cause Analysis) and risk assessments (e.g. Failure Mode Effect Analysis) throughout the facility to reduce the number, severity and cost of losses. Provides educational programs for Professional and Nursing staff to promote patient safety and reduce liability loss.
Evaluates new and existing services and procedures to determine if they present risk to the organization and assists with countermeasures to improve the service in cooperation with the Director of Loss Prevention.
Manages the electronic incident reporting system and ensures that events are identified, addressed, trended and analyzed. Performance improvement opportunities are identified and facilitated. Works collaboratively with Accreditation and the Director of Loss Prevention.
Participates in routine rounds in all clinical areas in collaboration with the Nursing department to identify and remediate areas of risk.
Promotes the reduction of healthcare errors and improves systems and processes by searching for the root causes of events, working collaboratively with nursing, professional and administrative staff members, focusing on patient safety and developing key strategies to reduce liability exposure.
Integrates with the Patient Safety Officer and Director of Loss Prevention to reduce hazards to patients, staff and visitors.
Identifies through the review of events, problems, patterns and trends that reflect opportunities for prevention and improvement.
Oversees and assists with the conduct of root cause sessions to thoroughly investigate sentinel or adverse events consistently across the organization.
Interfaces with quality and patient advocates to address complaints or grievance related to safety and risk.
Assesses actual adverse incidents, interfaces with the Loss Prevention Manager and makes recommendations for improvement.
Keeps Senior Leadership and appropriate management apprised of status of Significant Injury and Sentinel events.
Cooperates with the Director of Quality to ensure reporting of specific occurrences in accordance with regulatory requirements
Provides risk management education for the leadership team, professional staff and employees concerning methods for decreasing risk.
Reviews all incidents and events recommending corrective action and monitors effectiveness of actions and countermeasures.
Participates in the planning and review processes for ethical issues and new services.
Acts in an advisory capacity to all Hospital departments in identifying and correcting unsafe conditions and practices.
Serves in an active role in the event review and reporting process.
Adheres to TMCH organizational and department-specific safety, confidentiality, values, policies and standards.
Performs related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in Nursing required. Master’s degree in Nursing preferred.
EXPERIENCE: Five (5) years of risk assessment experience, preferably in an acute care setting.
LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION: Current RN licensure permitting work in the State of Arizona. CPHRM preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of risk assessment and insurance requirement best practices.
Knowledge of reporting requirements and federal and state regulations regarding risk assessment and reporting.
Skill in evaluating situations and making recommendations to lessen risk to the hospital.
Skill in facilitating and developing professional relationships.
Skill in serving as a coach, mentor and positive role mode.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret scientific and technical journals.
Ability to respond to sensitive and/or confidential inquiries or complaints from regulatory agencies.
Ability to make effective and persuasive presentations or write articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format; ability to effectively present information in an educational setting.
Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts and statistical tools such as those typically used to measure or quantify quality improvement.
Ability to define problems, collects data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
Ability to work in a fast paced environment utilizing tact, patience and diplomacy.
Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
