General Summary
Responsible for managing the daily clinical operations, administrative functions, and financial activities of pediatric nursing services.  Collaborates with physicians, management, and other clinical leaders and staff to promote efficient, high quality care delivery that assures patient satisfaction, regulatory compliance, and provider efficiency.  
Essential Responsibilities
  1. Determines staff qualifications and competency:  recruits, selects, hires, trains, orients, mentors, and rewards.  
  2. Manages/supervises and develops an effective staff: providing effective communication, leadership, guidance, and resources.  Directs in-service and continuing education activities for staff.  Monitors staff safety compliance and use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), as needed.  
  3. Evaluates staff performance regularly and determines merit increases, promotions and disciplinary actions.
  4. Responsible for managing the revenues and expenses. Collaborates with Medical Director and CNO in developing annual capital and operating budgets. 
  5. Proactively evaluates, plans and implements new or revised clinical services or programs to enhance quality, volume, revenue and margin. Functions as a change agent and catalyst to promote program change, operational efficiency and maximal productivity of staff and resources. Prepares short-term and long-term program plans to meet institutional goals and objectives.
  6. Develops and evaluates a staffing plan assuring sufficient and appropriate resources are available.  Identifies opportunities for alternative staffing, sharing resources, and staffing to demand.  
  7. Participates in assessment and implementation to determine the individual needs of the patients and          overall program needs for the institution. Establishes standards of nursing care and nursing practice consistent with national standards, literature, and the philosophy of the institution.  
  8. Assures competent utilization of institutional information systems, including identifying training needs, monitoring quality of order/reports/charging and maximizing use of system in department operation.
  9. Evaluates the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice on the units, analyzing appropriate internal and external data and information to identify opportunities for improving services and patient outcomes.  Implements and evaluates a practice improvement and quality assurance plan.
  10. Partners with others to identify and analyze opportunities for program expansion. Evaluate factors related to safety, outcomes, effectiveness, cost, and social impact when developing and implementing program expansion. 
  11. Prioritizes patient safety through promoting a culture of mutual respect, adherence to best practice principles, following up on any patient incidents. 
  12. Facilitates communication and problem solving for departments; leads or serves on committees; serves as a liaison between the medical staff and nursing staff.  Serves as a resource person: develops, interprets, supports, and implements policies and procedures. 
  13. Conducts self in a professional manner by being accountable for actions, communicating with peers, subordinates, physicians and public in a professional manner, and maintaining confidentiality of patient/family/staff information and interactions.  
  14. Promotes research, and integrating evidence-based knowledge into the identification of best practice in the delivery of nursing care to the appropriate population.
  15. Performs all other duties as assigned.

  1. Performs, as directed, safety compliance and uses Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), as needed.
  2. Participates in Quality Assessment (QA) and Quality Improvement (QI) programs, as directed.
  3. Ensures compliance with The Joint Commission and all other Federal, State and Regulatory Agencies.
  4. Responds promptly and sincerely to customer’s needs, requests and concerns via all communication forms using easily understood language and refraining from using inappropriate language and non-verbal gestures.
  5. Maintains positive working relationships as a team player through problem solving issues, speaking positively about others, listening attentively and observing the Patient Bill of Rights and Confidentiality.
  6. Increases customer service knowledge, skill and ability by participating in department and institution-wide specific programs.
  7. Incorporates National Jewish’s identity (Science Transforming Life®) into daily functions.  Speaks positively about the institution, provides customers with prompt service, maintains a clean and safe working environment, dresses appropriately based upon National Jewish safety standards, and departmental policies and wears an ID badge visibly.
Knowledge and Skills
Knowledge, skill and experience in a specialty pediatric clinic or inpatient service.  Skill and experience implementing established professional nursing practice standards. Must apply appropriate application of the nursing process, professional theory and practice.  Must possess the ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, members of the healthcare team, and administration.  Incumbent must have exceptional oral and written communication skills; attention to detail and possess strong organizational skills. 
Education 
BSN required. Master’s Degree in Nursing or relevant field preferred
Certification and Licensure
Current Colorado Professional Nursing License and CPR/BLS required.  PALS certification required within six months of hire.
Work Experience
A minimum of four (4) years of recent and related pediatric nursing experience with a minimum of two (2) years leadership experience
- or - Any equivalent combination of Education and/or Experience  
Working Conditions
Position is in an office environment.  Frequent requirements may include: sitting for extended periods, entering and manipulating data on a workstation computer and participating in team/executive meetings. Approximately 75% of daily responsibilities will be working both one-on-one and in teams with other personnel and extended one-on-one contact in a quiet environment where hearing and listening is paramount.  Must possess the ability to communicate by observation, verbal, written and listening; standing; walking; climbing stairs; stooping to remove/replace files; good hand-eye coordination; lifting, pulling, pushing, and upper body twisting while handling supplies and equipment; sitting while completing paperwork; using keyboard for PC and word processing needs.  Occasional requirements may include: stand, walk, use hands to manipulate, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, and lift/move up to 25 pounds.  Incumbent may be scheduled to work an alternate schedule to accommodate essential business needs; routine travel by foot or automobile to alternate work/meeting locations may be required, possibly during inclement weather.

No environmental conditions indicated.  Professional office environment with time of each day spent in interaction with management/staff, in addition to planning and working autonomously. Requires teamwork and the ability to handle multiple interruptions; frequently fast-paced; high-pressure; occasionally variable-paced; variable pressure.  Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be provided to each employee when needed as determined by policy.  Utilization of PPE is mandatory. Estimated 1700 employees in the worksite.
